In the world of college coursework, designing and building a modular house that can accommodate an entire family without creating any carbon emissions sounds like a steep ask.

But that’s exactly what one team of students from Orange Coast College and UC Irvine have been doing, side by side, for the past year and a half.

The stylish, solar-powered result of that collaboration, called “luminOCity home,” was on full display at the Orange County Sustainability Decathlon at the county fairgrounds in Costa Mesa earlier this month. Read more

UC Irvine Team Ranked High in Orange County Sustainability Decathlon Results

teamMADE, a sustainable home design and construction crew with student members from the University of California, Irvine and Orange Coast College, placed second overall in the Orange County Sustainability Decathlon, which was held Oct. 5-15 at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.

Edged out slightly by the first place-winning Rancho Cielo Construction Academy, based in Salinas, Calif., TeamMADE (Modular Affordable Dwellings for the Environment) had its name show up in several of the award categories, including first place in engineering & construction; first place in market potential; second place in sustainability & resilience; third place in architecture & interior design; third place in communications & marketing; and third place in innovation. SCE Backs College Teams Vying to be Sustainability Decathlon Champion

Fourteen colleges worldwide compete in Orange County to build the most sustainable, energy-efficient homes. There are no bands, cheerleaders or fight songs, but this college championship may be the most important contest this fall.

Fourteen teams from colleges as far away as China are competing this month in the first Orange County Sustainability Decathlon. The competition was designed to inspire students to build the most sustainable, ultra-efficient homes to meet California’s goal of 100% renewable energy by 2045. Read more

OCC, UCI collaborate for OC Sustainability Decathlon

Orange Coast College and the UC Irvine are partnering together to design and build a sustainable home in the Orange County Sustainability Decathlon 2023 in early June 2023.

The OCSD23 is a competition challenging multidisciplinary teams across the world to design and build eco-friendly homes.

Officials will evaluate each house in 10 different categories, such as Sustainability and Resilience, Architecture and Interior Design, Engineering and Construction, Communication and Marketing, Innovation, Energy Efficiency, Water Use and Conservation, Health and Comfort, Lighting and Appliances, and Market Potential. “OC World,” the public affairs program on L.A. PBS affiliate KLCS, recently devoted an entire episode to the Orange County Sustainability Decathlon. The episode featured interviews with several prominent figures, including State Sen. Dave Min, Cal State Fullerton College of Engineering Dean Susan Barua, and Orange County Sustainability Decathlon President Fred Smoller.

Two UCI teams to participate in Orange County Sustainability Decathlon 2023

Competition challenges engineers to design and build net-zero carbon energy buildings

Two engineering groups from the University of California, Irvine – one in partnership with Orange Coast Community College and one from the UCI Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering – are among the 18 teams chosen to enter the Orange County Sustainability Decathlon 2023.

The OCSD23 is a collegiate competition that challenges multidisciplinary teams from architecture and engineering schools to design, build and display innovative, net-zero energy buildings with sustainable materials and state-of-the-art technology. Teams have 17 months to produce their homes, which will then be showcased at the OC Fairgrounds in October of 2023. The houses will be judged in 10 categories related to sustainability, design, efficiency, comfort and communications/marketing. Read more
