About Us
teamMADE was founded in October 2021 with a proposal to build a showcase to compete in the Orange County Sustainability Decathlon from October 5-15, 2023.
Who is teamMADE?
teamMADE is a partnership between Orange Coast College and the University of California, Irvine consisting of faculty, students, and community members who are passionate about sustainability, working on a ‘real’ project, and doing it all for a good cause.

Team
Our team worked on a semester system at Orange Coast College and on a quarter system at UC Irvine engaging about 60-80 students at both schools for the duration of classes. Students were able to choose their sub-teams based on their interest instead of being limited to participating based on their major which gave them the rare opportunity to get out of their comfort zone and try something new. We were proud to see our students grow as the Engineers wrote engaging newsletter articles and social media posts, the Architects learned about the latest and greatest engineering systems, and the Literary Journalists looked at this project from a holistic, humanistic, and philosophical perspective. Construction was an all-hands-on-deck approach giving anyone on the team the opportunity to learn important life skills.
Our Client
teamMADE was introduced to Homeless Intervention Services-OC (HIS-OC), a local non-profit doing amazing work out of Placentia, California in October 2022. Since 1989 HIS-OC has been running various programs to transition people out of homelessness including the HomeShare OC Program, Housing Connection Program, and Transitional Aged Youth (TAY). The TAY program was created out of a long-observed need to provide wraparound services for a unique population that doesn’t fall into the common category for family shelters. It serves adolescents, 18-24 years old, who are trying to overcome trauma of family cycles of abuse, aging out of foster care, leaving juvenile incarceration, or various other situations. With plans of expanding the TAY program it was the perfect opportunity for teamMADE to design, engineer, and build a house with the specific needs of the future residents in mind. The team built a 750-square feet ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) to be placed in the backyard of HIS-OC’s property in Placentia and to add 4-8 additional beds to the TAY program.
